Big hearts wanted: Toronto drops fees to get large dogs adopted over the holidays

Seeking: Torontonians with big hearts and a warm home to a big dog.

The City of Toronto is waiving the fees for adopting large dogs — those that weigh over 50 pounds, or big-pawed puppies that will likely surpass that weight — until Friday.

City officials say big dogs like German shepherds or huskies wind up staying in shelters for 1.5 times longer than smaller breeds.

"Typically in shelters, what happens is everybody always wants a small dog. People love small dogs and people love puppies and we almost don't even have to post those when we get them in because they get adopted so quickly," said Elana Trainoff, manager of partnerships and animal services with the city.
